Early Fender Lap Steels

Richard Moffett

Two of my favorite Lap Steels! The solid maple guitar (lying down) control panel was hand chiseled instead of machine routed. It is signed by L. Fender himself! I’m not sure of its age, but it is branded Fender Electric Instruments. Standing up is an early blond “Champ” style with a very cool tweed case. They both sound great and give instant “street cred” when you walk into a session holding one!

National Resonator Hybrid

Richard Moffett

Old friend Sid Grafton found this old  (date unknown) National with its neck  in two pieces and an ugly, but original, powder coating. After an unremarkable chrome finish was added, he sent the guitar to luthier Jeff Hostetter who hand made a great round neck for blues and fingerstyle playing. Somewhere along the way a Humbucker was added and an a piezo acoustic pickup with the ability to use either or both.

All of the above actions have rendered this great guitar near worthless in the collectors world, but in mine,  it’s just the kind of gem I’ll hang on to. I have uttered the sentence “If you EVER sell this thing, PLEASE call me first!” hundreds of times in my life. The year Sid retired to Florida he came by and sold it to me for exactly what he had invested in it 30 years ago!

Thank you old friend…

The Telecasters

Richard Moffett

1984/85 was a great time for Telecasters. Made in Japan meant exacting re-issues of some timeless classics. Pictured here are first year runs of my all time favorites. The Telecaster Deluxe has a double bound body and Sunburst finish loaded with Duncan’s and a Guitar Fetish Pre-Amp. The Blue Floral has a Tremor Bender B/G string bender (works extremely well) and EMG Tele set. The Paisley is all original. No guitars were harmed during the installation of the above modifications!

The Strat Plus

Richard Moffett

I’ve always had a passion for the Fender Strat Plus.  I collect the first  few years of this model — 1987 through ’89. It was  based on the Jeff Beck Signature guitar. This Strat was preferred by Eric Clapton, David Gilmore ,Steve Winwood and Robert Cray (good company!). Cool colors, great pickups (Lace Sensor Golds), an all-American bargain. First year dates as E4 (1984) though the guitar was not produced until 1987. Pictured here are Strat Pluses in Coral, Bahama Green, Pewter and Shell Pink.  Since this photo, I’ve added a Seafoam Green.  Still searching for Graffitti Yellow and Powder Blue; then I’m done, I swear …
