1953 GIBSON EB BASS

Richard Moffett

As a young boy raised in Strinestown PA there were not a lot of quality guitars available to see and touch and dream about playing or even owning someday.

One family in the neighborhood made all of this possible. Kenny Krouse and his Dad had drums, amps, a Les Paul and this beautiful Gibson EB bass.

My memories were that these were the two heaviest guitars on the planet earth and quite possibly the two coolest! Our somber realities were the Teisco guitars at JM Fields or the Harmony and Silvertones in the Sears catalogs.

But at Kenny’s, thanks to his late father, we could see and touch and play the “real” thing. Now, almost 50 years later, one of these great guitars is sitting in my home office.

Thanks Kenny and family!

Two Great Old “RICKENBACHER ELECTRO” (pre-Rickenbacker) Lap Steel Guitars

Richard Moffett

Made in sunny California, these “Rick” Lap Steels are from two different yet early eras.

Standing is a “tin” post war steel stuffed with paper from that era to reduce feedback. Purchased from friend and former student Tom Warman.

Sitting in the case is an earlier “bakelite” model with it’s porcelan plates replaced with wooden inserts. This one was aquired from old friend and mentor Bob Campbell Sr.

Both guitars are in perfectly loud and sustaining working order.

1982/62 Sienna Burst Fender Stratocaster – One that got away!

Richard Moffett

In the mid 1980’s, between the end of a great band called WHEELS and the start of a bigger group RECKLESS, I decided to part with two vintage HIWATT 4/12 cabinets and this very heavy, but sweet sounding, Fender Stratocaster. I know it was a bad move now but good friend and long time student Jeff Keller has taken great care of everything and I can visit them whenever I want. Thanks Jeff!

Fall Harvest Time Part One… The Resonators

Raymond Eicher

1990’s TTT Tut Taylor Tennessean (mahogany top) with 1930’s Regal (black) both courtesy of friend and student Lou Sachs.

My 1990’s TTV Tut Taylor Virginian (maple top) and my re-chromed 1930’s National.

Certain guitars help me ease into the new season a bit easier!

1987 Fender Strat Plus… What Color Is It?

Raymond Eicher

I have owned Fender Strat Plus’ for over 20 years and I have never seen another one of this color. In person it is most definetely Orange. What do you think?

1991 Les Paul Standard

Richard Moffett

I've had quite a few older and newer Les Paul's over the years (Specials, Jr."s, Deluxe's and Standards)but I liked this one so much that I bought it twice! I sold it to a friend in the 90's an re-purchased it when his kids went to college.

It has a full sound and "the feel". Incredible weight (regular head & shoulder aches) and sustain. With an "average" grade top, my favorite color (not too red), it is aging just right and hopefully be with me for a long time.

BMI Pedal Steel10 string (3 pedal, 3 knee lever)

Richard Moffett

Portability, reliability and great sound are three reasons that I cherish this guitar. It is actually my second BMI steel. When I was house hunting in the early 90’s I sold a great BMI 1 1/2 body width to someone whom I can’t even remember (I’ll buy it back if you’re out there!).  Friend and former student Ben Reed was kind enough to lend this one to me often so I could make the recording sessions I had booked . I’m guessing he got tired of me stopping by to pick it up & drop it off and/or he bought a new Emmons Le Grande. I’m forever grateful Ben. It is a wonderful guitar!

G&L GEORGE FULLERTON 1991

Richard Moffett

Made for me when Campbell’s Music first became a dealer. “Pumpkin Orange” was not a color then, especially on a Fullerton, but they were glad to try. A V-shaped neck ? Sure! Vintage pickups? ok! Locking Sperzel tuners ? Absolutely! Two cases, one vintage, one stock G&L? yep!

1976 Gurian JM … My favorite acoustic

Richard Moffett

This Gurian guitar has been in my studio ever since 1976 (give or take a month or two). Mahogany, Spuce and Ebony…perfection. All handmade wood purfling & binding.

1976 brought me into Michael Gurian’s world.  The soundhole sticker says “GURIAN GUITAR WORKSHOP; EARTH, THIRD PLANET FROM THE SUN”

1955 Gibson J 50 (we think)

Richard Moffett

1955 Gibson J 50- We think (only the factory work order number is visible). Natural disaster, World War, Crazy Aliens? These could describe what happened to this ugly puppy of my collection.

Sweet, warm tones, powerhouse volume and full rich chords (below fret 5 of course) would also work. Purchased a few years ago from my friend Master Banjoist/ Master Luthier Chris Warner, this great, but unfortunate Gibson will always hold a warm spot in my heart. Naptha, compound, polish, hours of hand rubbing and this is all the prettier she will ever be.

Early Fender Lap Steels

Richard Moffett

Two of my favorite Lap Steels! The solid maple guitar (lying down) control panel was hand chiseled instead of machine routed. It is signed by L. Fender himself! I’m not sure of its age, but it is branded Fender Electric Instruments. Standing up is an early blond “Champ” style with a very cool tweed case. They both sound great and give instant “street cred” when you walk into a session holding one!
